Without even looking it up, The Brute Man is PD. It was produced by Universal, but when star Rondo Hatton died, they sold it off to a Poverty Row studio to distribute (they didn't license it, they sold it off completely). In fact, it just got released on the most recent MST3k DVD set, included because there were no licensing issues (two of the other films on the set were licensed from Sandy Frank, which probably cost a bit, given the history between that show and him).

Actually, most of Sandy Frank's licensing agreements have expired, so Best Brains dealt with the parent Japanese company.

But wouldn't Frank still own the specific dubbing he did? Which, that dubbing job was one of the keys to those movies' hilarity.

Didn't work that way for "King Kong vs Godzilla," "Gigantis the Fire Monster," or any other Toho film dubbed by Americans that was PD until the new laws kicked in.
